This post is a bit late but now that the holiday craziness is winding down I have some time to sit down and share all the details of our penguin bash we had for my sons first birthday!
I just can’t get over the fact that he’s already a year. Time flies by but stands still at the same time. He is sleeping through the night, he has been for a while, but I remember those sleepless nights.
I was convinced they’d never end but like every phase it comes to an end and he’s on to the next.
Okay, enough about that let’s get on to the details.
When I started planning his birthday I knew I wanted something wintery but not the typical ‘onederland’, don’t get me wrong those themes are gorgeous but I don’t have the time to plan/make/order/buy all the beautiful decorations that come along with that theme.
So instead I decided to focus on just a couple details and roll with that.
I just love penguins and since his birthday is round Christmas it was pretty easy to find lots of things that I could incorporate into the theme.
I made the mountains, trees, polar bear and penguin using the cricut machine. The mountains and trees are just your basic triangle cut to different sizes.
The penguin punch wasn’t quite ready but I wanted to get a picture of the set up before people arrived. To make the punch I mixed Sprite and blueberry cocktail mix I found at my local grocery store, it was a hit!
I kept the table super simple, I scattered some penguins, and placed some larger ones on the plates. The centrepiece was a vase with a couple teal ornaments, I glued some more penguins and polar bears to some skewers and that’s it!
I would have probably preferred beads of some sort for the centrepiece but I just worked with what I had on hand.
I didn’t get a chance to get a picture of the food unfortunately but I did manage to get pictures of the cake and cupcakes.
I used one of the larger penguins for the cake topper and frosted it white to resemble snow.
I made cupcake versions of the cake, using smaller penguins as the topper. And white buttercream icing to resemble the snow, again super simple, so absolutely cute, and not to mention delicious!!
I also made the birthday banner using the cricut machine, using your basic triangle shape and basic lettering, so I didn’t have to purchase anything special to make it. I found these adorable clothes pins at The Dollar Tree and I wasn’t quite sure how I would use them, but I just had to get them. They ended up being the perfect size to hold the banner together.
I used black balloons and had my daughter draw some cute penguin faces, I cut some feet and wings freehand and taped them to the ballon and hung them from the ceiling.
I hope you found some ideas for your party. Just remember to have fun with your planning!
